"The Meyer Store Building at 101 N. Main was built in 1860. The Greek Revival styled 2-story, 3-bay brick was originally built as a house-store. Originally 3 stories high it was reduced to 2 stories by
the tornado of 1876. Built by Ludwig Meyer (c.1805-1874 ), a
jeweler and organ builder who emigrated from Hannover, Germany in
1834 and purchased the 41 foot lot in 1838; Meyer served on the
first Board of Directors of the St. Charles Mutual Fire Insurance
Co., established in 1860. Meyer heirs operated a jewelry store here
as late as 1966." ~ NRHP Nomination Form
