Fire protection services began in 1884. The Department serves the cities of Melrose, Meire Grove, and Greenwald along with the surrounding rural areas.
The bell and maltese cross that adorn the corner of the station commemorate Kyle Weisbrich. Kyle was a volunteer fire fighter for the city and was involved in a motor vehicle accident while enroute to the Station for a rescue call. The accident occured, 11:38 am on Sunday November 12th, 2006. Weisbrich was driving a motorcycle and collided with a passenger car. He was transported by ambulance to Melrose Hospital. He died at the hospital from injuries sustained in the accident.
