Peterson Air Force Base now houses the 21st Space Wing, the Air Force's only organization providing missile warning and space control to US forces worldwide. On April 28, 1942, Army Air Forces officers in Colorado Springs created the base and the Photographic Reconnaissance Operational Training Unit. Officials selected the Colorado Springs Municipal Airport, established in the mid 1920s, as the site for the new air base. The old Colorado Springs Airport Terminal is now part of the installation's museum. The base closed in December 1945 and the property returned to Colorado Springs while the United States demobilized from war. As the 1950s approached, "the Cold War" was about to begin and Peterson AFB was re-activated.
Era: WW II
