The Lower Locks of the Pawtucket Canal includes two lock chambers, a dam, and sluice gates that control water in the Pawtucket and Eastern Canals. The lock chambers were originally built to help canal boats get around the 32-foot drop at Pawtucket Falls.
Here at this location, the Lower Locks on the Pawtucket Canal dumps into the Concord River just before the Concord converges with the Merrimack River, the source of Lowell's canal system.
Waterway Name: Pawtucket Transportational Canal
Connected Points: Circumventing the Pawtucket Falls on the Merrimack River, originally to allow barges to navigate the water, the canal system was expanded for hydro-powering the mills of Lowell. The canal system empties out into the Concord River, itself to disappear into the Merrimack’s waters.
