Known as "Porta Portese" because of the 16th century entrance to the city in the nearby Aurelian walls, the flea market has mostly vendors of clothing and antiques. Until very recently, gypsies and other non-licensed vendors would have items for sale, spread on the ground, but a crackdown by the newly-elected municipal administration has effectivelly banned the non-licensed vendors from showing up.
The market has been portrayed in the 1947 movie by De Sica, "Bycicle Thief", as the main character looks for his stolen bycicle.
