The area is difficult to photograph, and the day I was there, a truck was in the way to get a good overview of the photograph. I stitched the pictures together to give an overview of the mural, and also posted individual photographs, breaking the subject up.
Area History
The history of the area is quite amazing. From a European settlement point of view alone, the area was claimed by the English, French, Spanish and finally America. Although our written history surrounds European history, evidence supports Native American settlement in the area for a considerable amount of time prior to European settlement.
The event that sets Palmyra, MO appart, and might otherwise make the community seem ordinary if not for this event is the Palmyra Massacre during a series of heated American Civil War engagement in the area during 1862. Located directly across from the mural is the monument that is represented in the mural, memorializing the events of that sad event. For a better understanding of that event, go on to this link.
Another website for area history explaination and attractions is in the Great River Road website.
