To deal with the growth of the county over the years, a second court building was erected behind (to the west) of the courthouse. This new building is refered to as the Kootenai County Justice Building and houses additional court rooms, additional judge's chambers, court clerks and court records. With the addition of the second building the courthouse is now commonly refered to as the "old courthouse" to not confuse it with the newer justice building.
On December 23, 1977, the Kootenai County Courthouse was listed on the National Registery of Historic Places.
In 2009 the following tenants occupied the "old courthouse." 1st floor: Juvenile Probation and Juvenile Diversion Departments. 2nd floor: Prosecuting Attorney's Office. 3rd floor: Court rooms # 1 though 5, and Judges chambers. 4th floor: More Judge's chambers. Formerly most of the county departments in the Administration Building were also housed in the old courthouse.
