From the plaque which describes the park:

"Garrison Square Park was designed and constructed as a monument to the memory of Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Calgary . Currie Barracks with special recognition to the men and women who served at the base and with units in the Calgary area. The park also pays tribute to the ongoing struggle of Canadian Soldiers to keep peace around the world.

The design is based on a double spiral which envelopes the park and represents opposing forces in war. One spiral is defined by sandstone blocks listing battles in which Calgary-based units have fought. United Nations service is also recognized. The other spiral consists of Thunderchild crabapple trees. The deep ping flowers and bronze red leave represent the blood spilled in war. Together, the battle blocks and trees stand in silent tribute.

The raised central plaza, with its four spiral ramps, portrays the hope to achieve a final resolution of conflict. The sandstone posts and steel structure encloses and protects the focal point of the par, a central oak tree, the symbol of rebirth and life.

The design of the park represents the Canadian desire to ensure peace and prosperity for all while illustrating the sacrifices made to achieve that goal."
