The Konijänkkä Kotieläinpiha (koti-eläin-piha literally means home-animal-yard) Animal Park near Äkäslompolo in Finnish Lapland has a variety of animals you can meet and interact with.
You can read more on their website: www.konijanka.fi
Here are some examples:
-
Lappish cattle (Pohjoissuomenkarja) a very rare breed of cattle (there are only about 90 left) capable of thriving on a low input in the harsh conditions of Lapland. Unfortunately, along with the low input, comes a low output so they are not popular in modern agriculture.
-
Lappish sheep sheep bred for life in Lapland
-
Poitou donkeys large donkeys with huge ears. These originate from the Poitou region of France. They were used (along with a breed of horse called a Mulassière) for breeding large powerful mules for agricultural use. In contrast there are also some miniature donkeys.
-
Horses a variety of different kinds of horses, large and small, including the big traditional Finnish horses bred for forestry work and some tiny ponies too (I'm not sure of the breeds)
-
Pigs There are vietnamese pot bellied pigs, rare curly haired Hungarian Mangalitzas ... and a big pig called Pamela - I'm not sure what breed of pig Pamela is but she's very friendly.
There are other animals including ostriches, llamas, birds, goats, rabbits and a couple of very friendly cats.
Activities include:
-
Husky sled rides
-
Horse riding (sleigh rides, treks, lessons)
-
Kids' snowmobiling
