This memorial dates back to the time when World War I was the only World War. In 1923, with the war still a fresh memory, and in hopes that great wars had ended forever, the American Legion planted this redwood tree. It was the first of what would turn out to be many veterans' memorials in San Mateo's Central Park.
The plaque reads:
"This tree planted May 30th, 1923
by San Mateo Post No. 82
American Legion
in honor of those who served in
the World War
1917-1919"
