Douglas A-4E Skyhawk 1961
General History:
Early in the Korean War, Douglas Aircraft designer, Ed Heinemann, became concerned with the growing weight and cost of fighters and set out to design one that would reverse the trend. The result was the A-4 Skyhawk; one of the lightest attack aircraft ever built.
The smallest aircraft ever capable of carrying a nuclear weapon, it won most of its fame hauling iron bombs in Vietnam. Versions were also used as two seat trainers and the Skyhawk was a brilliant performer with the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels for more than 13 years.
The A-4E version of the Skyhawk saw imporvements to the engine, avionics, radar, and capability to carry a wider variety of weapons. This A-4E is painted in the markings of Lt. Cmdr. John S. McCain III aboard the USS Forrestal in 1967.
