Rockwell T-2C Buckeye 1970
General History:
In 1956, the U.S. Navy issued a requirement for an all purpose jet trainer that could be used to instruct student pilots from basic training through their carrier qualifications. North American Aviation (later Rockwell International) won the contract based on a simple design utilizing elements of the FJ-1 Fury fighter adn T-28C Trojan trainer.
The original version of the Buckeye was produced with a single engine, but starting in 1968, the Navy took delivery of the T-2C version, equipped with two engines for better flight performance. It aslso featured excellent visibility for both instructor and student, and a tail hook for carrier landings. Virtually every naval aviator from 1960 through 2003 trained on the Buckeye at sometime in their career. In addition, it has two under-wing hard points for carrying gun pods, practice bombs, or rockets for armaments training.
The Museaum's Buckey is on loan from the National Museum of Naval Aviation.
