Buffalo Lake, Minnesota, located in the very heart of the most prime agricultural land in America, was named after a small lake north of the city limits. Buffalo Lake was a favorite stopping place and watering hole for horse-drawn wagons and U.S. Troops making the trip from Fort Ridgely to Hutchinson. Large herds of buffalo roamed the prairie at the time, hence the city's name. The city was surveyed in 1881.
Today its natural resources are Lake Allie and Lake Preston, located ten minutes north of Buffalo Lake, providing excellent recreational fun for fishing, water skiing, boating and swimming. Lake Allie, supported by an active local Rod and Gun Club and Lake Allie Park Association is a fisherman's dream, well-stocked with good sized pan fish and fighting game fish. Beautiful Oakdale Country Club, located on the northeast shore of Lake Allie, is a highly rated, immaculately groomed eighteen hole golf course open to the public. Both a state park and county park are located on Lake Allie, offering excellent camping facilities.
The annual Buffalo Lake Days takes place in late July with softball, volleyball, horseshoe tournaments, parades, dance, Classic Cars, firemen breakfast, kiddy tractor pull lots of food and fun.
