Union County was formed in 1818 from a portion of Johnson County. The county seat was located in Jonesboro where it remains today. The original courthouse was a log building located in the town square. This building soon proved to be too small for the rapidly growing county. The current courthouse was built in 1857. Since its construction it has been added on to several times.
