The township of Arthurs Pass and the railway station are situated at the gateway to the Arthurs Pass National Park in the South Island's Southern Alps. The town lies just east of the actual mountain pass at a slightly lower elevation. The Pass itself is 920m above sealevel.
The Tranz Alpine scenic train stops at Arthurs Pass Station for passengers to get off and experience the mountain scenery before continuing through the Otira Tunnel to the West Coast.
