Fort Lincoln is the last of three forts constructed for the defense of Point Lookout and it is the only surviving structure from the Civil War at Point Lookout. Fort Lincoln was the main Union fortification on the peninsula. As a key defense stronghold, Fort Lincoln was cleverly designed to resist attack. It is a four-sided earthen fort, approximately 60 yards square, with cannon platforms for six cannons, a powder magazine and a sally port entrance. Loose dirt on the outside slowed attackers, while hardened interiors resisted cannon fire. At the rear, or today's entrance, an L-shaped passage protected the gates from cannon fire or a battering ram. The entire fort was surrounded by a dry moat. Built near the end of the Civil War, Fort Lincoln saw no action. The four buildings, located within the earthen fort, were reconstructed utilizing 1863 United States Army Dept. of Engineers blueprints.
