The St. Mary's parish was founded in 1865 to serve the growing population of German Swiss immigrants. The current church had its cornerstone laid in 1883, completed in 1884 and was consecrated on July 20th of that year, being only the fourth Catholic church consecrated in Minnesota. For more than 100 year the parish was served by priests from the Benedictine Order of St. John’s Abbey at Collegeville, Minnesota. In 1997 due to the shortage of priests the abbey could no long provide priest, now St. Mary's and St. Michael's share the services of two priests from the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis.
