Perth Zoo is a great day out for the family. It contains open space suitable for picnics as well as many animals and themes.
The zoo concentrates on Australian, Asian and African animals with a smattering from the South American region. There are a number of "walk-through" enclosures including aviaries where the visitor is as close to the animal as would be possible.
There are many activities during a zoo day including keeper talks and close encounters with suchlike as snakes (have a feel of a real snake!).
Zoos have changed markedly over the years with animal welfare high on the agenda. The days of for example, bears in small enclosures pacing back and forth in only a few metres of space in hard and harsh surrounds appear to have been long ago left behind. Perth Zoo's animals seem healthy and contented.
In common with many zoos, they also take part in animal breeding programmes, particularly of endangered species.
Other facilities available include a cafeteria and giftshop, but take wet weather gear if rain is imminent.
Check the zoo website for hours of opening and admission prices. I suggest that pre-purchase online should be examined and avoid long queues at the entrance in the morning.
