Thomas Macy, first town clerk of
Amesbury, erected this house prior
to 1654. Persecuted for harbor-
ing Quakers he sold the house
to Anthony Colby and fled to
Nantucket, becoming the first
white settler there as related
in Whittier's poem "The Exiles".
Thomas Macy "harbored" Quakers in his home for a few hours during a thunderstorm - at the time harboring Quakers was a criminal offense!
This marker and house is located at 257 Main Street, Amesbury, MA just off of Route 110 - Macy Street.

Visit Instructions:
When logging a Massachusetts Historic Marker, we ask that you not only describe your visit, but to upload a picture from it. The picture does not have to be of the marker - one picture of the marker is enough. But a photo of you standing next to the marker or a photograph the subject of the marker - those are examples of possible photographs to upload.
