Closed in the 1970s due to declining use of asbestos, the V.A.G. Asbestos mine was basically abandoned, leaving the buildings and machinery resting where they were last used. Although the mine is is considered a site of possible contamination and is slated for an EPA cleanup, the area has many picturesque areas with crystal clear lakes, waterfalls and quarried cliffs.
Mine Type: Abandoned Mine
Mineral Collecting: No
Material Mined: Asbestos
Operation: Opencast Mine
Surface Features: Yes
KNOWN DANGERS: Shear cliffs with danger of falling rocks from above.
Danger of falling off edges, or gravel slides when approaching edges.
Any Other information: I'm not an environmentalist, but I sure get miffed when I see big operations just abadoned without any measure of cleanup by its owners. Criminally irresponsible, in my opinion.
