The $6 million, 45 metre tall tower is the first completed part of the airport's terminal expansion. It has a base of around 64 square metres tapering to a 12 metre control cab at the top.
The cab has 12 30mm-thick glass panels, each weighing around half a tonne and tinted to meet the stringent operating requirements of Airways NZ. The concrete foundations, poured by Hawkins Construction in July, required 38 truckloads to complete the job.
The structure was designed by Napier-based Paris Magdalinos Architects and project leader Chris Ainsworth says it was challenging working within specific technical boundaries. He says no metallic objects could be used near the antenna dishes so some of the equipment, including screws and bolts are made from glass and polycarbonates.
