"This station site was located on the southwest corner of Mt Diablo Blvd and Moraga Rd. It was called the Lafayette House and operated by N.P. Lake. He ran an advertisement on April 28. 1860 that stated, "there are good stables attached to the premises..."

The road that the Pony Express followed in 1860-1861 was used only 20 times and only going westbound. The rest of the time the river steamers between Sacramento and San Francisco would be used.

The route went along today's Mt Diablo Blvd and the freeway through Orinda and then up Fish Ranch Road. The Pony Express then followed the streets of Claremont, Telegraph and Broadway to the wharf in Oakland where a ferry would be taken to San Francisco."
