What started as the Clare City Bakery in 1896, has now become the internationally renowned Cops & Doughnuts City Bakery.
The previous owner was going to close shop in July 2009, when nine of the town's police officers decided they'd join together and keep the business going.
Know of course pretty much everybody has heard a wise crack or two regarding cops and doughnuts, so the officers decided to run with it. After about a month, people were coming in and scooping up the merchandise at such a rate, they bought the shop next door. Items like T-shirts and coffee mugs with witty sayings like, "Hand Cuffs & Cream Puffs", "Don't Glaze Me Bro", and "We Frisk Our Fritters".
These officers sure know how to make doughnuts! They're huge! (The doughnuts, not the cops) Their apple fritters are as big as my head. (I bought two)
