The Wilmington & Western railroad, a 20-mile track between Wilmington and Landenberg (PA) was built in 1872 to furnish passenger and freight service along the Red Clay Velley. In 1883, the Baltimore and Ohio railroad purchased the line and operated it until the 1920's.
