Description:
Sculpture consists of ten figures engulfed in a flame. The figures are robust in appearance and seem to be rising out of the flame. A maternal figure dominates the top of the piece; she looks upward with upstretched arms. At the rear, an old man falls into the fire but not before handing the Torah to a young man who ascends from the flame. The sculpture stands on a hexagonal base. In front of the base is a gas-fed eternal flame. The whole work rests on a concrete mound whose pock-marked appearance represents bullet holes.

I have driven by this church for many many years but I never knew this memorial was here. I discovered it through the Smithsonian website and had to check it out. I was very impressed with it. I just wish the sun was in a different spot because I don't think my photos does it justice. I will go back and get better pics during a different time of day, of course.
