The Providence and Worcester Railroad is one of the older railroads in New England, and is an important regional railroad that operates in four states: Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New York. Its headquarters is off Hammond Street in Worcester, MA. One way to get to the location is to follow Route 146 North into Worcester, then after crossing under I-290, follow Quinsigamond Avenue until you hit Southbridge Street. Turn left onto Southbridge Street to Hammond Street less than a mile away on the right. Follow Hammond Street under the bridge and take the next turn into the P&W Headquarters.

The building has a large sign on the southeast side stating the name of the railroad. It is a brick building with multiple stories, and looks like an old mill factory.

The present railroad became an independent operation in 1973. When it started, it had 45 miles of track in use. Today, it has 545 miles of track, obtained through acquisitions. The web site claims that the P&W RR is the only regional railroad that operates in Rhode Island and

The Company web site states that it "transports a wide variety of commodities for its customers, including automobiles, construction aggregate, iron, and steel products, lumber, coal, ethanol, chemicals, scrap metals, plastic resins, cement, processed foods and edible food stuffs, such as frozen foods, corn syrup and animal and vegetable oils. P&W 's customers include The Dow Chemical Company, Northeast Utilities, Exxon/Mobil, Frito-Lay, Inc., International Paper Company, Smurfit Stone Container Corp and Tilcon Connecticut, Inc."

The company has received numerous awards and has been listed on the Boston Globe 100 top performing publicly held companies in Massachusetts.

The original Providence and Worcester Railway was organized in 1844. This railroad built track along or on the old Blackstone Canal. Later, the company was absorbed into the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad, then the Penn Central Railroad until 1973.
