Marker Text: Visiting the Twin Mesas
The cliffs of Table Rocks are a natural fortress that have drawn people since prehistoric times. One can imagine being upon an island, isolated, yet not too far from the sea of everyday life. Viewing the little details below is like peering out an airplane vindow: the matchbox cars and truncks, the patchwork fields, the ribbon of the Rogue River.
Geologic History
The Rogue Valley was once a vast plain of sandstone level with the height of the Table Rocks. About 10 million years ago volcanic activity in the region poured a river of lava into the ancient Rogue River Canyon. The sandstone, being softer than the basalt lava, eroded away leaving the Table Rocks high and dry 800 feet above the present valley.
