The Bottle Chimes are located in the first park in Colorado Springs, Acacia (North) Park, between Nevada Avenue and Tejon Street and Platte Avenue and Bijou Street and was included in the original townsite plat of Colorado Springs in 1871.
The Bottle Chimes are a whimsical use of empty gas cylinders. On the front is a bowling ball mounted to the drive shaft of this mechanical musical machine. A series of hammers connected to gears and pullies are caused to strike the empty bottles and they actually produce a nice melody.
Acacia Park remains a popular central gathering place in downtown Colorado Springs, providing the setting for musical concerts, fairs, outdoor markets, shuffleboard and a pleasant retreat from life's daily demands.
There is very little information available about this piece, but for the last 6 years the city of Colorado Springs sponsors "Art On The Streets". The show consists of artists from the Colorado area and from across the country. They enter pieces in this show and are judged by an acting juror. The pieces are left on public display for one year. Each year, after the end of the show, Colorado Springs takes the ones that are popular and places them in permanent locations around the downtown area.
I am quite sure that is how this wonderful, whimsical animated sculpture found it way to this location.
