From La Jolla Cove, stairways lead down to a beach that can be completely covered each time a wave rolls in. The waves splash off the bottom of the stairways. Here is the southern access point to the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park and Ecological Reserve. It spans about 6,000 acres of ocean bottom and tidelands starting in the south near Scripps Park at La Jolla Cove and continuing north past La Jolla Shores to the end of
Torrey Pines State Reserve. As a "look-but-don't-touch" ecological refuge, the park is an ecological haven and has become a popular destination for snorkelers, scuba divers, and kayakers.
