Willcox was in a way, built by the railroad, at least in the sense that the railroad led to the town becoming an important economic hub for this area of southeastern Arizona. The demand for goods and services was met with the appearance of a business district, located near the tracks and comprised of mercantile establishments, banks and saloons.
Many of those buildings still exist and are part of the aptly named Railroad Historic District. Today the town's commercial center has once again aligned itself with a main transportation corridor, the nearby Interstate Highway. Meanwhile the historic district has remained viable as a tourist destination where gunfighters perform in the streets, and a home town boy made famous is honored with his own musem and so it continues its role in the life of the town.
