M4A3 - Sherman Tank

The Sherman Tank was designed in 1940 and started production in 1941. Initially, the tank was distributed via the "Lend-Lease" program with European nations during the opening stages of World War II. The British named the tank "Sherman," after General William T. Sherman. This was done so with respect to the United States in their naming practices of choosing names after famous American Civil War generals. When the tank was brought into the American arsenal, the name stuck.

Many different countries used the Sherman Tank. Over 50,000 of the tanks were produced. The tank was used in war such as: World War II, Greek Civil War, Arab-Israeli War, Korean War, Suez Crisis, Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, Six-Day War, Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 and Yom Kippur War.

There are many interesting points of the M4A3 Sherman tank. It has a gasoline motor, which a couple of the models had replaced to diesel. Diesel fuel became the fuel of choice for the military due to it's lower combustibility. The A3 version also began to see a different gun added to it. Most versions, including many of the A3 version, contain a 75 mm gun. The newer armlament was the 76 mm gun.
