Beugelen was a ball game dating back tot he late middle ages. A 3 kg heavy ball had to be moved by means of large wooden spoons to play it through a ring which acted as a goal (see (visit link)

This small statue is placed on a concrete sockle along a canal in the southern part of Nieuwegein, which used to be called Vreeswijk.
