I remember when this piece was first unveiled in Denver. Many laughed and complained at the simplicity and vibrant color of this 'Articulated Wall.' This 85-feet tall sculpture is located along Colorado's main north-south highway, I-25 and has become a well-known landmark. The plaque reads:

articulated wall, 1985
herbert bayer, (austrian born, american citizen) 1900-85
herbert bayer made a lifelong commitment to integrating art into human environments. his ideas about art were fueled by the philosophy of bauhaus, the important german school of art and design where he studied and later taught. during his career, bayer was a painter, photographer, architect, sculptor, and designer of graphics, exhibitions, environments and typefaces (including this one). for twenty-eight years, bayer made his home in aspen, where he designed the aspen institute for humanistic studies campus. bayer intended articulated wall to be not only viewed from close up, but especially from interstate 25, where it seems to change shape when seen from a moving car. articulated wall belongs to the denver art museum's herbert bayer collection and archive.

climbing on the sculpture is prohibited

Interesting facts:

- It is constructed of 32 pieces of pre-fabricated concrete elements each measuring 41'x5'2"x2'7".
- The wall is held together, through the center of the sculpture, with a refueling mast taken from an aircraft carrier.
- Two million pounds of concrete were used to create the 85-foot tall sculpture.
