Mifflin M. Marsh started rolling cigars in his home and selling them from a basket down by the nearby landing on the Ohio River in 1840. Their mainstay was a cigar referred to as a "Stogie," named after the Conestoga wagons along the nearby National Road. Stogies were a long and narrow cheap cigar favored by the teamsters that drove the wagons.
The Wheeling plant was closed in 2001 and the brand was bought by National Cigar, which now produces under the Marsh Wheeling brand in Frankfort, Indiana.
See the nearby waymarks for related WMs, including the iconic neon sign that lit the night for so many years. Sad to see it go dark.
