The name was changed from Western Plaza to Freedom Plaza in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. who worked on his "I Have a Dream" speech in the nearby Willard Hotel. This open plaza only one block from the White House is often used for festivals and public protests.
The large open surface of the plaza is inlaid with a granite map of the the L'Enfant Plan for the streetscape of the city. The compass rose can be found mid-way on the south side of the plaza along Pennsylvania Avenue.
