Text of marker:

Central Methodist College
-1854-

This campus dates from the opening of Fayette Academy in 1826, renamed Howard College in 1835 and Howard High School in 1844. In 1852 the school built Howard-Payne Hall as student lodging, later enlarging it for classes. Meanwhile, the state chartered Central College, founded in 1853 by the Methodist Episcopal Church South as "The Central College" for Missouri's Methodists. Howard-Payne and Central merged as Central College in 1923, and in 1961 became Central Methodist College.
