The Lewis & Clark Expedition passed through this area on their return trip. In 1859, the first settlers established ranches in the area and began raising grain. In 1865, Sylvester M. Wait established a gristmill on the Touchet River and the town of Waitsburg grew up around the mill. The railroad reached Waitsburg in 1881. In Nov. 1881 the Washington Territorial Legislature issued the city a charter under which it was incorporated.
Today Waitsburg is the only Washington city to still operate under a Territorial Charter. The current population of Waitsburg is about 1200. Many of the buildings in the downtown area are part of the Waitsburg Historic District. The city hall occupies the historic 1889 First National Bank building.
