Eierläset is an old tradition that probably dates to pre-christian times, but has not been documented before the 16th century. It has almost become extinct in the 19th and early 20th century, but then there was a revival in some villages in the area. Nowadays this is happening in about 20 to 30 villages mainly in Swiss cantons Baselland and Aargau. In Augst the location is a little street in front the Roman theater.
The term is local dialect and not easy to translate, maybe "Egg Harvest". It is kind of a race, but the rules are not that clear, they are different in every village and sometimes change each year. In most villages it's done one week after Easter Sunday. Usually there are two teams and two rows of about 100 raw eggs. The team members have to run, get an egg from the floor and throw them to their cacher, who holds a basket full of sawdust. Every broken egg is replaced. Sometimes there are additional requirements for the participants to make things more difficult and interesting, like wearing heavy firemen uniforms or run with skis on the feet.
The race usually takes about an hour, then all the remaining eggs are prepared and given to to public for free as fried eggs, scrambled eggs, egg salad etc.
