After much debate a decision was finally made to build a new library for the citizens of St. Catharines. During that time, two decorative owls were stolen from the old library but eventually returned and placed at the new library.
The new library takes up 63,000 square feet and can hold 267,440 volumes. There is 'reading & study' capacity for 314, and an additional 250 in meeting rooms. Under ground parking for 48 cars, and another 44 outside.
Built at a cost of $3.6 million, the first sod was turned on 14 JAN 76 and the official opening of the building was 22 JUN 77. The library was designed by architects "Macbeth, Williams, Woodruff and Hadaway"
