On a scenic spot overlooking the ocean sits a cemetery known as the Old First Parish Burying Ground. The land for the cemetery was donated by Richard Tarr, one of Rockport's first settlers. Mr. Tarr is buried in this cemetery after his death in 1732, and you can still find his headstone.
The inscription on the marker reads "Original plot given by the first settler, Richard Tarr, who was buried here in 1732. Here lie most of the early settlers and many of the officers and soldiers of the French and Indian, Revolutionary and 1812 wars."
