Long Description:
Along Heald Street in Pepperell Massachusetts sits this old pound. The pound is about 25 feet by 25 feet or 625 square feet. The walls, which have been topped with wood to help with restoration, are made of individual stones stacked up about 3-3.5 feet high. Each corner has a wooden pyramid cap on it. On the front, in the left hand corner is the gate. On either side of the gate is a stone pillar, about the same height of the wall. On the left pillar is written:
"Ye Olde Pound
1756
1770
1850"
On the right pillar is written:
"Restored by
P.W. Chap
D.A.R
1930
Restored by
I.O.O.F
1985"
The dates on both pillars refer to the building of the pound in 1756 and various attempts to rebuild or restore it over the years.
