Marker Name: Oregon Trail
Marker Text: Dedicated to those spirited and courageous pioneers who traveled the Oregon Trail.
During the “Great Migration” of 1843, wagon trains came all the way to the Oregon Country. The stout hearted pioneers endured many hardships. Their fearless descent from the rugged Blue Mountains led many north, through this area to the Whitman Mission. The Oregon Trail was repeatedly changing with the discovery of short cuts, and by 1845 the majority of emigrants were by-passing the mission. However, those who were in need of aid and supplies still turned their wagons in that direction.
Ezra Meeker came to this beautiful valley on May 14, 1910 to mark where the Oregon Trail had been. With the help of Central School students, rocks were piled around a pipe to help Meeker make a small pyramid monument.
