This piece can be found outside the air terminal at Keflavik. The artwork is by well known Icelandic artist Ruri. It reaches 24 meters into the sky and is made of stainless steel and stained glass. It sits on a low platform of natural stone tiles. When the sun shines through the glass panels, the effect is amazing.
“The natural rainbow materializes out of the blue, lasts for a few moments and disappears just as suddenly as it appeared. Nobody can grasp it, nor even get close to it, yet it holds a very special value for most”.
Ruri views the piece as an unfinished construction that may one day be finished by another to form a complete rainbow. Rainbows hold special significance in Icelandic folklore as well as in the rest of Europe. In both areas they are seen as bringers of good luck to those who can stand underneath it.
