Marker Name: B20 - Deschutes County Courthouse
Marker Text: The county court was created along with the establishment of Deschutes County in 1916. For the first nineteen years, county offices and the courthouse leased space in the O’Kane Building then county rented the former Central School from the school district in 1933 to gain more space.
In 1937, a suspicous fire left the south wing an empty shell. State officials suspected arson, but to this day no one has been charged with setting the fire. In 1940, a W.P.A grant funded building of what we now recognize as the original portion of the current courthouse.
