In 1916, during World War I, patriotism was running high in our country and in the little town of Glendale. The citizens of Glendale were looking for a way to express their patriotism. Under the guidance of Mayor A. W. Bennett and town engineer, Harry White, their desire to fly the Stars and Stripes came about through "Glendale's Towering Flagstaff".

For over a half century, at this very location, a majestic wooden flagpole once stood proudly as a mark of distinction and pride in Glendale. The old wooden flagpole, over 110 feet tall, was shipped from Oregon aboard three flat cars. It was donated by Mr. M. A. Sherman, owner of the Phoenix streetcar lines.

On October 7, 1964, the old wooden flagpole was laid to rest and soon after was replaced with the flagpole that stands here today.
