The harmful insect (phylloxera) was imported in 1872 with vines from California. From London to France, the insect spread out over whole Europe and led to the collapse of viticulture. Only a grafting of cultivars on resistant vines allowed a successful culture.
Because of climate change, fallow vineyards and the growing number of domestic vine, phylloxera is currently experiencing a renaissance.
