"Harubangs or "Grand Father" statues originally stood outside the gates of the Cheju Town Fortress as guardian deities. The Harubang's comical expressions with bulging eyes, long broad nose, and slight smile can be found everywhere on Cheju Island. They are made from porous basalt or lava rocks. In 1971, Harubangs were designated Cheju Island's second most important cultural asset by the South Korean government. Harubangs are not allowed off the island, but these were donated on exception to the the H.U. Lee Garden by Kim Tae Hwan, the governor of Cheju Island, South Korea." - plaque on site
