From a marker on the station - 'Beginning in 1867, railroad tracks cut across the Winterthur property. The Wilmington and Northern Railroad (of which Henry Francis du Pont's father was president) used the line primarily to transport freight, although there are accounts of visitors arriving at Winterthur by train.'
The Winterthur Estate was established by members of the DuPont family. Today the estate is a museum and gardens - (

Nearby to the station is a spur track on a bridge, likely used to unload coal for heating the mansion.
From the web site 'Living Places' (

By 1866, through consolidations, it was incorporated in both Delaware and Pennsylvania as the Wilmington and Reading Railroad Company. After financial difficulties, the railroad was reorganized as the Wilmington and Northern in 1876.
