GOLDEN — Shahram Moghadamnia was a popular member of the bicycling community, a man who looked for the good in people and the silver lining in difficult situations. The only thing he loved more than cycling and skiing was his family.

When he walked into Pete Horneck's bike shop in Applewood, everyone was happy to see him. But when Moghadamnia stopped to top off his tires for a 50-mile ride on April 19, Horneck would be one of the last to enjoy his company.

That afternoon Moghadamnia, an engineer for Coors who was known to his friends as a safe rider, was eastbound on a narrow section of West 32nd Avenue near Golden when he was struck by a westbound mail truck that veered into his lane.

Moghadamnia, 53, left a wife and two teenage children, one of whom is scheduled to graduate from Golden High School on Saturday.
"If anything good could come out of this, I'm hoping for improvements on West 32nd Avenue, simply because of the volume of (cyclists) who use the road to get from as far east as downtown Denver (or) Cherry Creek, all the way to Lookout Mountain — thousands of bicyclists," said Moghadamnia's widow, Sharon. "If there is any way through this tragedy that we can make West 32nd Avenue a safer place through those tight turns, Shahram would be all in favor."
