Brand new, opened May 14, 2010, this is a new venture from Merlin Entertainments Group, a $15 million, 26,000 square foot aquarium. Their site doesnt explain much, and we are waiting for the summer crowds to disappear before we go there, but from newspaper accounts, and other online information, this is supposed to be the first stand alone aquarium of their 33 aquariums from this company, having more than 5,000 different sea creatures. It is only the second aquarium of theirs in the US. Sea Life Arizona features more than 30 display tanks in 12 distinct habitats housing more than 5,000 creatures in 200,000 gallons of water. The aquarium is home to a variety of sea creatures such as seahorses, rays, sharks and species indigenous to Arizona. You can touch the marine creatures at the tide pool. They have a shark tunnel among other cool exhibits.

The aquarium is designed so that visitors travel a defined path through to the end. There are places to stop along the way, but generally, it is a good idea to keep moving forward and not backtrack against the flow of traffic. There is a logical progression of exhibits, starting with Arizona lakes, rivers and caves all the way to the Pacific Ocean and coral reefs.

From a newspaper account (Arizona Republic, 12/2/09)
In addition to out-of-state marine life, the Valley's Sea Life will display animals unique to Arizona's water ecosystems. Visitors can talk to biologists, touch tide-pool creatures and watch octopuses, sharks, rays and seahorses feed, said Chris Spaulding, Sea Life's North American curator.
